GT Differentiation Designer

Gifted students don't need more of the same work โ€” they need work that actually challenges them. This tool adapts a standard lesson for gifted and talented students using three research-backed strategies: curriculum compacting (removing what they already know), enrichment (depth and complexity), and acceleration (moving faster or deeper into content). Grounded in the GT literature and the Youth Adventure Program approach for high-achieving middle schoolers.

Curriculum Compacting Renzulli, 1977
Curriculum compacting removes content GT students already know (or can learn rapidly), freeing time for enrichment or acceleration. It requires evidence that mastery exists โ€” use pre-assessment data, not assumptions. Target: 40โ€“70% of standard lesson content can often be compacted for identified GT learners.

Enrichment Strategies Tomlinson, 2001
Select the enrichment strategies you will implement. Check a strategy to enable the customization field. GT enrichment should replace standard work โ€” not be added on top of it.
Acceleration Options Rogers, 2002
Acceleration moves GT students to more advanced content โ€” either within the same subject or across grade levels. Rogers (2002) found subject-matter acceleration to be among the most effective GT interventions with strong long-term outcomes. Use selectively and with student/parent awareness.
