Credit-by-Exam ROI

AP, IB, and CLEP exams cost real money and real study hours, and they only pay off if your college grants credit you can actually use. This tool prices each exam you are considering: the exam fee plus your study hours valued at your own hourly rate, against the per-exam credit grant you transcribe from your college's policy, valued at your tuition rate per credit. Every exam ranks by net dollars, and the negative-ROI ones are flagged to drop.

Exam fees are editable defaults (typical 2025-26 published registration fees). Credit grants, tuition per credit, and approval odds are transcribed by you from your college's own policy pages; this tool stores no policy database. data_vintage: user-supplied.
How the math decides
For each exam: money in = exam fee + study hours × your hourly value of time. Money back = credits your college grants × your tuition rate per credit, weighted by the chance the credit actually applies to your degree (articulation caps and major requirements make this an estimate; you set it). Net = money back − money in. A positive net means the exam beats just working those hours and paying tuition out of pocket; a negative net means drop the exam or negotiate the policy. Credits that count only as elective filler are exactly what the approval slider is for.
