Immigration Career Planner

Two linked decisions for H-1B workers navigating employment-based immigration: whether a job change is safe given your portability and processing timeline, and how your priority date and remaining wait time should shape long-horizon career decisions. The H-1B tool feeds directly into the green card planner — run them in sequence for a complete immigration-career picture.

Step 1 · AL-151 · H-1B Employer Change Planner
Plan a Job Change Without Losing Work Authorization
Key InputsLast day at current employer, new employer start date, I-140 approval status, whether I-140 has been approved 180+ days (for AC21 §214(n) portability), preference for premium processing.

H-1B portability under INA §214(n) lets you change employers without the cap lottery — but only if your new employer files an H-1B transfer petition before your authorized period expires. The 60-day grace period begins the day your H-1B is terminated or withdrawn, not your last day worked. Any gap between jobs during that window is unauthorized presence risk. The tool calculates gap days, flags risk status (safe/warn/risk) against the 60-day boundary, estimates premium processing completion date (30 business days from filing, ~$2,805 as of FY2026), and shows the full USCIS filing fee breakdown ($460 base + $600 asylum surcharge). AC21 §214(n) portability eligibility is computed separately: requires I-140 approval, and unlocks full job-change flexibility if the I-140 has been approved for 180+ days. Export the record for your immigration attorney review.

Step 2 · AL-152 · Green Card Wait Planner
Model Wait Time and Career Decisions Around the Backlog
Key InputsCountry of birth, employment preference category (EB-1/2/3), priority date, I-140 approval status, years elapsed since priority date, target role (stay at same employer / change roles / startup risk).

Per-country caps under INA §203 create wait times that range from under one year (most countries, EB-1) to 70–90 years (India EB-2/EB-3). The tool looks up your country/category combination against historical DOS Visa Bulletin progression rates, subtracts years already elapsed, and produces an estimated remaining wait. It then models three career paths against that timeline: staying at the same employer (AC21 §106 H-1B extensions apply if I-140 approved and date not current), changing employers or roles (portability requirements, same/similar occupation test), or joining or founding a startup (priority date portability under §204.5(e), employer of record risk). The output is a plain-language career timing recommendation — which moves are safe now, which should wait, and what the green card timeline means for your leverage. This tool's output pairs directly with the H-1B portability record from Step 1.
